Shu Umera: Essence Absolue

Quality hair care products are a must.  With the right products you can transform unruly hair into the beautiful hair you've always wanted.  My current obsession is Shu Umera's Art of Hair Essence Absolue Nourishing Protective Oil. Seemingly innocent in minimalist packaging this multi-use elixir moisturizes and helps protect hair during styling.  The formula provides high shine and UV protection, plus it's safe on color-treated hair.

Essence Absolue has been carefully designed as a multi-use elixir serving many needs including repairing dry hair on an individual basis by serving as a leave-in conditioner, pre-shampoo treatment for deep conditioning, protection during color application, shine enhancer, and protective oil.

Celebs including Jennifer Aniston and Sheryl Crowe *love* this product (and so do their stylists).  Click here for more info.

The 5 Items in my Beauty Bag

First of all, let me just preface this post with a simple fact: I never leave the house without my beauty bag. And really, I mean never. Not even when I'm off to the gym, or a neighborhood yoga class, or for a quick errand down the street. Never. So with that being said, here's a quick look at the top 5 items that have permanent residence in my beauty bag.

# 1- Oil Blotters
As someone with combination skin oil blotters are not only a lifesaver they are a must-have. I'd rather blot oil than apply excessive amounts of face powder trying to absorb it. I love that these sheets remove shine without ruining your makeup. They instantly make me feel refreshed.

#2- Lip Gloss
I'm addicted to lip gloss because my lips constantly need hydration and because I love the shine. I also find that lip gloss helps my lipstick last longer.

# 3- Black Eye Liner

No matter what kind of day I'm having- a quick swipe of a rich black eyeliner instantly makes me look wide awake and ready to take on the world.

#4- Lip/Cheek Stain
I love products that multi-task which is why I'm in all about lip/cheek stains that can help add color to my face when I hit my afternoon slump. Plus, products like these don't take up much room in your makeup bag!

#5- Face Powder
When I need to look polished and my oil blotters aren't enough to get the job done, I resort to face powder to give me a fresh face.

Benefit Cosmetics Powders: What to Skip, What to Stock

It’s no secret. I’m a make-up junkie and during a recent product purge I noticed that I own just about every Benefit Cosmetics powder the company makes. This is partially because for a short time I was a counter manager for the brand, but mostly it’s because I truly love makeup and when a brand I love launches new products I have to try them!

Dandelion- This is the “Perk Me Up” face powder but honestly I think this powder only perks you up if you have a really pale complexion, so on me, this powder doesn’t show up at all. I think it’s a pretty ballerina pink but aside from the cute box and soft scent this powder really doesn’t do much for me. I’d skip it.

Coralista- This powder is so pretty when used as a sheer blush or as a 4pm Pick-Me-Up when you’re having a long day. The warm color makes me skin glow! If you’re looking for a Nars-style orgasm glow, this could be the complexion powder you’re looking for. Buy it.

Hoola- This powder is Benefit’s claim to fame in my book. When I worked for the company it was our # 1 most request product because it was constantly being featured by beauty magazines like Allure. The distinction between this powder and other bronzers on the market is that the color of Hoola is very flat and doesn’t have all the extra shimmer and glitter that most other bronzers include. This means you can use this powder to contour your cheekbones if you’re savvy with a makeup brush which can instantly make you look svelte and 5 pounds lighter. That’s a PLUS in my book. Buy it.

10- This is for the girl who wants the best of both worlds: the darkness of a bronzer with the shimmer of a highlighter to create a pretty glow. You can use one side or the other for specific coverage but I like the idea of the 2-in-1. It frees up space in your cosmetic bag! Buy it.

Sugarbomb- If you like the idea of a product that multi-tasks then this is the product for you. This quad powder includes 4 shades of powder including a soft peach, a sheer plum, a shimmer pink and a pink rose. Sweep them together on your cheeks for a major color rush. Buy.

Georgia- I love the idea of a Georgia Peach but this powder is a lot like Dandelion in my book except that it’s not muted pink it’s muted peach. If peach is part of your color story then maybe I’d buy this product but otherwise, you might be better off picking one of their other powders. Skip.

Dallas- Another one of my fave Benefit Powders! This one gives skin a pretty outdoor glow and has a hint of shimmer. I also like that you can use this powder on the cheeks and forehead for a beautiful color wash or on cheeks alone depending on what kind of mood your in and what kind of color coverage you’re looking for. This powder is pretty and pink but it’s not overwhelming and the color is super easy to blend. Buy.

Thrrrob- This powder is 1-2 shades darker than the Dandelion complexion powder so the coverage is a bit better (even on my olive skin tone), but I’d still say you’d get more for your money by going with one of the other powders instead. For some girls this powder can be the sheer blush you’ve always dreamed of but I’d still recommend Sugarbomb so you can customize your color. Skip.

Powderazzi- If you can’t decide what powder to buy then try the Powderazzi because you’ll get to try all 3 famous Benefit Powders in one. The set includes Coralista, Hoola and Dallas so you can play, layer and pair until you find a combination that works for you. If you travel a lot like I do, this is a smart buy because the box contains all the powders I would have packed in my cosmetics bag anyway. Buy.

Can't Get Enough of MOR Cosmetics

MOR Cosmetics have had a special place in my heart ever since I stumbled upon them at Fred Segal in Santa Monica. The soaps, luxurious body butters and yummy lip glosses are must-haves on my list.

MOR is the result of a dynamic collaboration between Australian designers, Dianna Burmas and Deon St.Mor. With a shared passion for travel, food and the arts their union led to the development of an extensive range of contemporary lifestyle products and the opening of an interior-design retail store in the Melbourne. Their signature pieces included lamps, vases, cushions, candle holders and stationery with a distinct, chic-urban edge.

The range later extended to include a collection of soaps, lotions, aromatic oil blends and candles. Inspired by traditional apothecary, they had fallen in love with the endless possibilities of blending age old & contemporary ingredients and decided there and then to channel their energies into this vision. Today MOR has over 250 beauty products and the brand is sold in some of the world’s savviest beauty and lifestyle emporiums, spas and department stores, including Harrods, Fred Segal, Nordstrom, Lisa Kline, and Anthropologie.

Shop for Mor Cosmetics locally at Queen Anne Dispatch, Stuhlbergs, and Nordstrom.

Oh Alice!

The launch of Tim Burton’s rendition of Alice in Wonderland, due in theaters on March 5th, is both enchanting and inspiring the cosmetics industry. Urban Decay has created a limited-edition “Alice in Wonderland” palette complete with 16 eyeshadows featuring names like “Alice” and “White Rabbit”. The set also comes with two travel sized eye pencils and one mini sized Eyeshadow Primer potion. “Burton is dark and edgy, yet everything he does is really beautiful at the same time,” said Wende Zomnir, Urban Decay’s creative directior and co-founder. Industry sources estimate that the Urban Decay palette, which retails for $52, could generate as much as $4 million in sales.

OPI will also celebrate the debut of Tim Burton’s movie with the launch of a signature “Alice in Wonderland” set featuring 4 shades of polish including “Absolutely Alice” (a blue glitter), “Off With her Red” (a vivid red), “Thanks so Muchness” (a red shimmer) and “Mad as a Hatter” (a black multi glitter shade). The Alice in Wonderland set will retail for $8.50.

Alice in Wonderland opens in theaters March 5th.

L'Oreal Roller Foundation = FAIL

Make-up artists can often be overheard telling women, “Treat your face like a canvas” and even though that phrase is merely just a figure of speech, L’Oreal apparently missed the memo because the U.S. launch of the True Match Roller hit stores earlier this month. When it comes to cosmetics, treating your “face like a canvas” means to think of your skin as a blank palette, one that you can create into anything your little heart desires by using make-up artist tips and tricks….it doesn’t mean literally thinking of your face as a canvas that you can paint with a roller brush.

As a former beauty counter manager for Benefit Cosmetics, I can personally tell you that the best way to apply foundation is to apply it with your fingers and blend with a sponge if needed. Using a roller brush to apply foundation results in uneven application and the need to blend with your fingers anyway….so why bother using the roller brush in the first place? Plus, over time the roller brush will become caked with foundation from previous uses making the application process even worse.

Foundation is literally the base of your face and if you want to look stunning instead of scary you really need to use proper methods of applying it to your face. L'Oreal's True Match Roller Foundation was launched in the UK last fall and received a mixed bag of reviews by British beauty addicts.

Here are some of my favorite reviews pulled from various sites. Apparently I am not the only one who thinks this product is a major fail...

I pissed myself laughing when I saw the advert for this. It really is the ultimate laziness rolling foundation on your skin like you would roll paint onto a wall. Use your fingers. It's not difficult. I can't abide anyone who thinks this is even a sensible/non piss take of an idea for a cosmetic product.” -Ilora

It looks ridiculous. Also surely the roll on sponge would just get all manky. Fingers are best.” –Peet

I saw the advert and couldn't help but laugh - me and my mother decided we were going to be seeing girls with a stripy effect going on down their faces any time soon. How are you supposed to get it on like, round your nose? And it's not going to go on evenly I would imagine.”- Suzy

“So after using this foundation, I found out that it makes my face look like a greaseball even after I use powder to set it... AND the application of it doesn't work as well as I thought. There is a lot of finger usage for blending the straight edges that form when you roll it over your face - just like when you paint a wall... the more you roll that thing over your face, the thicker it becomes and obviously, no one wants the cakey look.”- Kailey

“(L’Oreal) Who in your product design division thought that this would be an attractive and appealing delivery mechanism? Have you ever — ever — heard a woman say, “You know, I would enjoy putting on foundation so much more if I could do it with a miniature paint roller…” ??? Does it make that nasty little sucking sound that paint rollers make when you pull them off the wall or out of the pan? Do you have to tape off your lips and nostrils so as not to get any foundation on there? (And let’s not even talk about the hygiene aspect of it. For your peace of mind, don’t even think about it.)” - Voxy

The people have spoken...but, if you decide to take the plunge and try this new foundation, feel free to drop me a line and let me know how it works out for you!

Best Skin Care Serums

Part of my nightly skincare routine is the use of a great serum. Using a serum is an excellent way to revitalize skin while you get your beauty rest while repairing damage to the deepest layers of the skin. Many serums contain Vitamins A, C, and E. Vitamin A is retinol which helps skin increase collagen production and therefore leads to smoother skin with a reduction of visible wrinkles. Vitamin C also helps with the production of collagen and is considered a potent anti-aging ingredient while Vitamin E increases cellular renewal.

Here are my top 3 skin care serum picks:

DDF Mesojection Healthy Cell Serum which is marketed as an anti-aging treatment for women who don’t want to go under the needle. Although that isn’t necessarily why I love this product (inject me in the face anytime) it’s still a good option for women who want serious results. Mesojection Healthy Cell Serum helps prevent free-radical damage that causes lines, wrinkles and discoloration by delivering antioxidants and peptides to the deepest layers of the skin. This serum wasn’t greasy and helped me skin achieve an overall tone I had never seen before. It’s pricey so you have to commit to it but the results speak for themselves.

Aveeno Active Naturals Positively Radiant Triple Boosting Serum is one of my favorites on the market. It’s affordable and the results are amazing because the serum is highly concentrated. It brightens skin, evens skin tone, diminishes the appearance of skin discoloration and spots (it helped fade red marks left over from old acne breakouts) and helps defend skin against free radicals that can lead to future damage.

Boots Radiance Renewal Night Serum is a great pick for helping skin stay firm while boosting skin’s cell renewal processes. Fruit acids work to remove dead surface skin cells to reveal radiant skin while Bilberry extract and vitamin A combine to renew the skin leaving texture soft and skin tone more even. This serum also helps to defend skin against free radicals. The formula feels like silk on the skin and smells lovely too!

My Journey to Clear Skin with Calidora

I recently came across a statistic that suggested more than 32% of women have cried over a breakout. I can totally relate. I’ve shed my share of tears too….probably more than most, or at least that’s how it felt at the time. I’ve dealt with everything from the lone blemish that stands out on the face and commands attention, to small bumps at the jawline, and persistent breakouts on the sides of the chin. And I did cry. All the time. I hated agreeing to social engagements weeks ahead of time for fear that another breakout might be around the corner. I hated meeting with new clients at work because I didn’t feel that people could take me seriously with my bad skin. And mostly I hated breaking out because it took such a toll on my self-esteem, even if I did a good job pretending that my breakouts didn’t bother me. I rarely took my make-up off, even when I was at home, because I couldn’t bear looking in the mirror and seeing the blemishes on my skin. I spent thousands of dollars buying makeup and skincare products to try and cover up the flaws, but nothing worked. The breakouts kept coming back and in some ways, they got worse. I cried myself to sleep on many nights and there were days when I didn’t even want to leave the house. When I was dealing with acne I saw numerous dermatologists, tried so many medications that my medicine cabinet looked like a narcotics lab, and tried nearly every skincare system in an effort to find something (anything) that worked. I bought the Zeno, the Marvel-Mini Blue (a hand held device that employs light therapy technology), the Pro-Activ system, and numerous over the counter acne medications. Even on “good” days my skin was relatively bad and over the years I learned how to become a magician with makeup.

When my now-husband proposed to me last September one thing became blatantly clear to me: I wanted flawless skin on my wedding day and I was willing to do anything to make it happen. Every dermatologist I saw continued to prescribe me higher doses of antibiotics in an effort to clear up my skin and still, nothing worked. I was finally ready to try Accutane when I heard about Calidora Skin Clinic. They promised to create a customized skincare plan for me and work with me to achieve the results I wanted.

My journey started with a complimentary 60-minute photo imaging complexion analysis followed by a detailed skincare plan that outlined the suggested treatments to help clear up my skin. In my case, the recommendation for treatment included a series of laser treatments in conjunction with customized chemical peels. When I weighed out the dangers of using Accutane with the price tag of pursuing the treatments at Calidora it was easy to see that Accutane was truly not an option. It was too risky and had the potential to cause birth defects and liver failure. So, I signed on for a treatment package at Calidora and took the plunge.

My first laser treatment at Calidora required patience because it actually made me break out worse. It’s sort of like when you get a good facial and it brings imperfections to the surface, the laser treatment had that same effect but the healing that followed was amazing. Once the blemishes started to heal my skin was smoother, calmer and the number of blemishes reduced. After a few laser treatments I could tell that my skin was headed in the right direction and the acne scars I had on my cheeks from previous breakouts were also beginning to diminish. The chemical peels were another story. I was so scared the first time I tried the peel because all I kept hearing from people was that it made your skin peel off in sheets. (Literally). Immediately after the peel is applied the skin is taut and smooth. Blemishes that were on the skin prior to the peel are significantly reduced and overall skin feels tingly and fresh. Peeling generally occurs within 1-3 days of the initial peel. My skin started peeling the next morning after the treatment and continued for at least two to three days afterward. Each day I slathered on a heavy moisturizer to help smooth the flakes and once the peeling was complete my skin unveiled a healthy glow I had never seen before.

My skin treatment plan continued and on a bi-weekly basis I alternated between laser treatments and chemical peels. It was a long process but by the time I was ready to say “I Do” my skin was ready too. In fact, it was glowing. Calidora helped me achieve the flawless skin I had always dreamed about and they did it without the use of harsh medications or prescription drugs.

Today my skin continues to remain clear and I’m so thankful to the amazing staff at Calidora Skin Clinic who supported me and helped me achieve my skincare goals. Having clear skin has changed my whole life and although at one point in time I was part of the 32% of women who have cried over a breakout I’m happy to report that thanks to Calidora I’m not part of that statistic anymore.

Fekkai Goes to Mass Market

The rumors are true. Luxury beauty brand Frédéric Fekkai is headed to Walgreens (and other mass retailers including Target). Existing beauty retailers who already carry the line including Sephora have already started to push back on the brand saying they will drop the line if it goes to the mass market.. Sales generated in Sephora for Fekkai products is an estimated $20 million per year (but by going to mass distribution Frédéric Fekkai could make an upwards of $50 million per year.
Women’s Wear Daily reported on Friday that while Procter & Gamble, the brand’s owner, would not share its mass distribution strategy or divulge sales projections, industry sources speculate Fekkai Classic is set to enter about 10,000 mass doors over the next year — about 30 percent of total mass distribution — to be merchandised in the pro hair care set, adjacent to premium hair care brands.
